Year 13 English Literature Students from:
St Catherine’s College Armagh
Royal School Armagh
St Patrick’s Grammar School, Armagh
On Thursday 31st January we travelled to the Seamus Heaney Homeplace in Bellaghy to attend the Key Stage 5 Lecture Series and Exhibition Tour specifically geared towards supporting the CCEA AS1 Specification; The Study of Poetry 1900 – present day.
Thirty-six students and three teachers from across the schools attended and had an invaluable experience in deepening their knowledge of Heaney’s life and location, an integral part of the assessment for this module. The exhibition tour provided an incredible insight into Heaney’s world, the locale and setting of his poetry and his experiences. We even got a guided bus tour of some of the iconic local spots which feature in Heaney’s poetry, thanks to Lyn Montgomery of the Royal School, Armagh, herself a local Castledawson girl!
In addition, the pupils attended a lecture delivered by Dr Frank Ferguson, specifically focusing on their combination of poets: Seamus Heaney and Robert Frost, followed by tutorials facilitated by English Literature PHD students.
Getting the opportunity to discuss their course with pupils from other schools, gave them a wider perspective on their learning and opened the door for discussion and collaboration. This was also invaluable for the teachers who were able to share teaching ideas, experiences and resources to support our pupils.
Many thanks to Shared Education for funding the transport and making this excellent trip possible.
